According the Wall Street Journal, Facebook founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg plans to donate $100 million  to the Newark public school system. The gift will be made with Zuckerberg’s private stock in Facebook. The official announcement is planned for an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” tomorrow.

The WSJ writes that Zuckerberg’s gift “represents his debut as a major philanthropist. According to the person familiar with the discussions, Mr. Zuckerberg decided he did not want to wait until he was near his career’s end before getting involved in major philanthropy”

A few weeks ago, the New York Times reported that George Soros’ donation of $100 million to Human Rights Watch was only the second pledge of its size this year.
